The Store Waste tab on the Pulse dashboard is used to present stat boxes and charts that highlight the real cost of waste in the store as measured against products that actually generate waste.
This article explains what is available, and how it can be used.

Waste tab
The waste tab is displayed in the image above. It provides you with a breakdown of waste activity within your store, allowing you to drill into waste by day or waste by category - as well as highlighting via stat boxes the material impact of this waste on your bottom line.
Waste per day chart
The waste per day chart is a great way for you to see the cost of waste being recorded on a day-to-day basis. This is useful for spotting and investigating spikes to make sure the store is trending in the right direction
Looking at the above chart you can see a significant spike on 27/03/2020.
By clicking on the title of this chart you will get a grid detailing all of the days, and the items that were marked as waste on each of those days so it is easy to get to the bottom of any unusual spikes.
The arrow is pointing to that excessive waste figure keyed for Puddings on the 27/03/2020 that was outlined as a spike on the chart.
From this grid you can choose to click the 'Actions' button at the top. This will provide you with a list of actions you can initiate on Pulse to solve a waste issue found in the grid.
Learn more about grids on Pulse by reading our How to use Grids guide.
Waste by category chart
The waste by category pie chart gives you an overview of which categories are struggling with the cost of waste. The number 1 and 2 categories with waste can sometimes be obvious (Deli and Food to Go often appears here) but you may be surprised to see other categories featuring highly on this chart.
Cigarettes and tobacco, for example, appearing in the above chart is a strange occurrence despite the fact that they would have a high value you would not expect there to be any waste on that type of product.
By clicking on the title of this chart you get a grid detailing all of the products with waste, classified by how badly affected they are by waste, making it easy to identify the products that you need to prioritise fixing.
There are a number of actions you can initiate from within Pulse by selecting an item and clicking the 'Actions' button - putting this product in a waste management campaign, for example.
Stat Boxes within Waste
Pulse presents a number of stat boxes in this section which allows you to see key information at a glance. We explain below what each stat box is referring to.
Waste Value V Last Year stat box
This stat box compares the year-to-date waste cost versus the same period of time last year. It presents this year’s waste as a value, and the percentage change (up or down) and then the actual waste cost for last year.
Waste V Sales (Items with waste) stat box
The Waste V Sales (Items with waste) stat box presents a key figure - on items which do tend to have waste, what has been their sales this year-to-date, and what percentage does the cost of waste represent of this value of sales. In the example above you can see that the cost of waste exceeds the overall value of sales - significantly.
Margin Impact (Items with waste) stat box
The Margin Impact (Items with waste) stat box presents another key figure - the impact of waste on margin. The previous stat box tells us the impact of the cost of waste versus revenue of products which have waste. But we know that the cost of waste must come straight from the bottom line, so how does that cost of waste impact on margin earned on those products.
We can see in the example above that the margin earned on these products was €12,453 but after we incorporate the cost of waste it turns out that we are actually losing €16,135 as a result of waste.
Items V Last Year stat box
This stat box presents the count of products against which waste has been recorded this year and simply compares that against the same time period last year.
Waste per day stat box
The Waste per day stat box presents the cost of waste on a daily basis based on the last month, and compares it against the average daily cost for the previous 90 days.
Replenishment Plans
A popular feature on Pulse is Replenishment Plans, sometimes referred to as Bake Plans. Use a Replenishment Campaign to discover how much of any particular item you need on a daily basis. It could be freshly baked goods like croissants or pre-prepared items like sandwiches or salads, or even chill replenishment. It is a great way to manage your stock and track the waste of products!
You'll be able to plan for the week ahead and keep on top of short shelf life fresh products. Learn more about Replenishment plans by reading our guide How to create a Replenishment Campaign.
