When you click on a graph, chart, insight or alert in Pulse, you will often be brought to a page which filters all the relevant information into headings. This is what we call a Grid - it's a customisable, downloadable table that lets you view and filter data however you need.

The following screenshot is an example of an open grid, and elements we are going to discuss below are numbered. If you want to see this image in more detail, simply right click and select 'View image in new tab'.

1. Close Button

The close button closes the grid and returns you to where you were when you opened the grid.

2. Columns

Similar to excel columns, in Pulse's grids the column title explains what each column in the table is. E.g. the Column title 'Product' contains is where you can find the name of the product in question.

3. Group by Column

You can change the view of the grid to be contextualised under a column title.

For example, if you want to see all the products in the grid broken down under each of their respective categories, you can drag the column title 'category' to above the grid and it will then categorise the products in the grid by their category.  On most grids grouping will provide subtotal, and you can expand or collapse these lines to view or hide all of the products under the category.

See below for an example of how to do this:

4. Export to Excel

The contents of the grid (this is the entire contents, not just the information you are looking at) can be exported to an Excel file by selecting the Excel button. This is a great way to get the data out to carry out further analysis. This export will respect the current format of the grid so if you have moved columns around, or grouped by columns, then bear in mind that this formatting will be preserved.

5. Hiding a column or adding a hidden column

You can hide a column from the grid by opening and then dragging the product to the “column chooser”(5). This can be useful if you want to exclude a column to make things clearer or if you want to export the grid to Excel and also want to exclude columns. Also, there will always already be hidden columns - these are typically product or store identifiers and are of use to MarketHub staff if questions need to be asked about values in a grid. Remember to close the column chooser when you are finished.

6. Searching

You can use the search section to find records in the grid eg product names. It finds the search term wherever it is in the grid.

7. Moving from page to page

The grid displays up to 25 results per page. To see the others, you need to use the page numbers in the bottom right which let you move from page to page. It also tells you how many results there are in total.

8. Filtering

You can filter on any column to see the data you want. There are a wide number of filter options. Filters can also be applied to multiple columns at once.

The best way to get used to the filters is to play with them. The GIF above highlights some of the features available. Selecting the magnifying glass always presents the types of options available and then you just type in your selection.

Note: There is always an option to reset the filter to the starting position.

9. Simple Filtering

Similar to Excel, in grids in Pulse you can click the drop-down on a column title to get a list of all the items listed in that column. You can select and deselect what you wish to be included in the grid by clicking the boxes like in the GIF below.

10. Exclusions

Exclusions allow you to permanently hide/ignore categories and/or products from an insight going forward. In a Price Suggestion insight for example, it might be useful to tell the system to ignore cigarettes and tobacco products. To do this, you need to select the products or categories and then tell the system to ignore them.

Note: You can ignore a category by selecting at least one product with that category and then selecting the ignore category option under the exclusions button.

Once you have selected the categories/products you want to ignore, all future presentations of this insight will ignore them. This change is instant.

There is also an option later to review what you have excluded and if you want you, can add them back in. You can do this by clicking the 'exclusions' button and selecting 'review exclusions'. See the GIF below for how to do this:

11. Actions

Actions allow you to take certain actions on selected products. These actions vary from insight to insight. You can learn more about specific actions on the insights guide page.

Sorting

There are two ways of sorting using column headers. Clicking on a column header sorts that column's contents, and clicking on it again will sort it in the other direction. You can also sort by right-clicking on the column header and it will present a drop list of options where you can choose to sort ascending/descending or clear sorting.

Moving a Column

You can easily move a column by selecting and dragging it to a different position.

Scrolling

Unless you have a huge screen, it is unlikely that you will be able to see all the records at once on your screen. Each grid presents 25 results per page, so it is likely that to see some of these records you will need to scroll down.

There are two ways of scrolling. The easiest is to use the scroll button on your mouse. The other is to grab and use the scroll bar at the bottom or right-hand side of the grid, which will appear as a thin grey line, but it get thicker as you hover over it with your mouse pointer. You can then click on it and drag it up or down as appropriate.
